Leaning into Pain

To lean in:
To incline or press into:
“You have to lean into the wind
“When you walk,
“Or you will be blown over.”

I have been surprised by how often
I must lean into the pain of others.

Absorbing their anguish full-on,
Leaning in without offering solutions.

There are no solutions to many pains.
Solutions are an illusion,
Designed to dismiss the pain
We do not wish to bear.

To lean into pain is to bear the pain with them.

To lean into pain is to accept the pain
We do not understand yet work to understand.

To lean into pain is to admit
That we have a role in causing the pain
And we need to ask forgiveness.

To lean into pain is to follow Jesus
Along the Via Dolorosa
All the way to Golgotha.

To lean into pain is to help create the Kingdom of God.

We must lean into pain as we walk
Or the pain will blow us over,
Tumbling us down the hill,
Over the rocks,
Into the ditch,
Among the weeds,
Lost to sight,
Gone.
